POINT CLOUD DATA
Canterbury Cathedral
The initial brief for this project, was to create a series of images which would tell the story of Canterbury Cathedral's exterior, expressed through artist's interpretation across time - bringing us to the most up-to-date representation of the cathedral today using digital technology.
To achieve the requested range of imagery, 3D point cloud scan data of the external façade, as well as key internal chambers, were rendered and provided for sampling, before the final image was printed at a dimension of 2415mm x 3840mm with a minimum resolution of 100 dpi. Various representations of the point cloud data were explored, by manipulating factors associated with point cloud density and scale, as well as colour hues and transparency, through Autodesk 3DsMax rendering port.
Final decisions were made through collaborations with Downland Partnership Ltd (Professional laser scanning surveyors), Canterbury Cathedral staff, as well as with graphic designers and art directors.
